Analysis of Serum Markers in Patients with Osteonecrosis of the Femoral Head

Abstract
|
|
|
Purpose: To investigate the correlation between osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH) and serum markers.
Materials and Methods: Twenty two patients diagnosed with ONFH, between March 2000 and July 2002, were investigated. A further 22 patients that presented with other problems (10 osteoarthritis of hip joint, 5 herniation of the intervertebral disc, 4 ankylosing spondylitis, 2 developmental dysplastic hips, 2 miscellaneous diseases) during the same period were investigated as the control group. The hypercholesterolemia, thrombophilia serum, hypofibrinolysis serum and immunological markers, and homocysteine, were compared between the patient and control groups.
Results: The Fibrin (patient 426.14 mg/dl, control 331.18 mg/dl) and Plasminogen Activator Inhibitors (patient 22.63(ng/ml), control 14.29(ng/ml)) in the hypofibrinolysis serum markers were found to be statistically significant(p<0.05).
Conclusion: Hypofibrinolysis may have a role in the pathogenesis of ONFH.
